I sat outside for an hour, flipping my phone open and closed, occasionally looking at the time, making sure I hadn’t somehow missed his call even though I hadn’t put the fucking thing down for even a second. You know how boys like him are, full of noble intentions when everything’s abstract, but then they chicken out the second shit gets real. It’s all hollow comic book chivalry. In their minds they are the good guys, always doing the right thing, but really they’re just little boys hiding in a treehouse from the real world, no matter how old they get.

"And they all pretend they’re orphans

I am not unaware that it is an example of the monster termed by the logicians contradictio in adjecto, because stating that a refutation of time is new (or old) attributes to it a predicate of temporal nature which establishes the very notion the subject would destroy. These bands were smart, clever, and knowing. Mangum, on the other hand, was smart, guileless, and unknowable. She’s barking at me to write songs, to create spontaneously, to open up my mouth and my body and become a conduit for the music. She wants me to write an entire rock-opera on the spot. Whenever I play a bum note or hesitate too long or flub the second rhyme of a couplet, she swats me in the face with a fly-swatter to show her displeasure.
